Treaty eventLaunched in June 2006 at the International Academy of Eating Disorders Annual Conference in Barcelona, Spain, at the inaugural World Summit on Eating Disorders, the Worldwide Charter for Action on Eating Disorders is a document detailing the rights and expectations of people with eating disorders and their families. The team at The Bronte Centre believes that broad acceptance of the Charter represents a defining step in the battle against eating disorders. Jan Clarke, Director of the Bronte Centre said:

“This will open up the forum for a united coalition, to help persuade policy makers around the globe to commit to the actions set forth in the Charter for the benefit of both suffers and carers,”.

Federal Member for Chisholm, Anna Burke MP, a strong supporter of the work of The Bronte Centre, was on hand to officially launch the Charter. She was joined by Federal President of the Australian Medical Association, Dr. Mukesh Haikerwal, and dignitaries from the medical and health fraternities, as well as representatives from both sides of Parliament, supporting and endorsing this historic occasion. Ms Burke said she was excited to see the Charter come to fruition around the world, and now in Australia. “Much more needs to be done to support those with eating disorders, their families and their carers. The Charter is the first step towards ensuring that those with eating disorders are given the respect and care they deserve,” Ms Burke said.
