The Bronte Centre seeks out research and best practice and has strong relationships with the following world-renowned experts in Research, Treatment and Prevention:
• Dr. Craig Johnson (renowned leader in the research and treatment field in the USA, Director of the International Academy of Eating Disorders and founding editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders
• Dr. Michael Levine (world renowned expert in the development and evaluation of Prevention of Eating Disorders)
By invitation the following leading lights have presented at our conferences:
• Dr. Emmett Bishop, psychiatrist, USA
• Dr. Vicki Berkus, psychiatrist, USA
• Dr. Ovidio Bermudez, paediatrician, USA
• Rick Kausman, eating disorders general doctor, Australia
This Charter, produced through collaboration between the International Academy of Eating Disorders and professional and patient/carer organisations around the world has as is core value, the imperative of a partnership involving patients, their families and the healthcare team in order to deliver quality eating disorder services.
The task force worked across 12 time-zones, communicating by e-mail and teleconferencing. A web-based survey of people with eating disorders, their families, carers and eating disorder health professionals drew 1,730 responses from 46 countries across a 6 week period. Australia (per capita) was the most significant respondent to the questionnaire, returning more than 350 responses and reflected a very sad state of affairs in treatment and support. Following the launch of the Charter in a number of countries around the world, the Academy developed a questionnaire to accompany the Charter so that individuals and families can evaluate their experiences in assessment and treatment against their rights and expectations. To access the questionnaire along with a copy of the Charter, please request copies via the 'contact us' link. The Bronte Centre acts a a repository to collate and file questionnaire results. It is hoped that sufficient numbers of respondents will provide a carer/consumer picture of services offered by the health care system and individual professionals, allowing potential and future users of these services to see how others have evaluated and rated them. At this point in time, the only service provider to receive outstanding results against the Charter is The Bronte Foundation. No individuals have, at this point in time been evaluated.
